Step Up: Water to Mountains – Naukuchiatal & Sitlakhet

Campers move through a carefully designed progression across two distinct environments—beginning with still water kayaking and basic outdoor survival at Naukuchiatal, and transitioning to backpacking and mountain-based experiences at Sitlakhet. The program builds skills step by step, starting with water confidence, paddling techniques, and understanding safety on the lake. As the journey shifts to the mountains, participants develop backpacking skills, campcraft, and mountain manners through hands-on experiences. A key highlight is the night-out, where campers trek away from base, pitch tents, cook meals, and spend a night outdoors—building independence, teamwork, and resilience. Bringing together water and land-based learning across two campuses, the program offers a well-rounded outdoor experience that encourages adaptability, confidence, and a deeper connection with the natural environment.

Safety & Care

Safety is maintained across every activity and daily routine. Camp Chiefs and instructors trained through NOLS, NIM, JIM, and HMI supervise all programs with a 1:6 adult-to-participant ratio, with at least one female instructor per ten female participants. Equipment meets international UIAA standards and is regularly audited. A resident doctor stays on campus for the full duration, with an emergency vehicle on standby and the nearest hospital in Ranikhet approximately 50 minutes away.

in-TENT-ionally basic

Participants stay in spacious tents in groups of four to five, with the opportunity to choose their own tent mates, helping them feel more comfortable while strengthening existing friendships, and with built-up toilets and hot water. Boys and girls are housed separately. Shared spaces include a cosy common room, a canvas-covered gathering area, a bonfire space, and a dining area, creating a welcoming and well-supported community environment in the heart of the Kumaon hills.

Fueled for Adventure

Nutritious, balanced meals keep campers energised through full days of outdoor activity at altitude. Food is predominantly vegetarian, with eggs at breakfast and non-vegetarian options available four to five times. Jain meal requests are accommodated. Regular snacks and hydration reminders are provided, and mealtimes are closely supervised to ensure every participant remains well-fed and healthy.
